The Eclipse Project

If you're interested in well-thought-out and cool dev platforms with wide open plug-in archictectures, a serious Java development evironment as the first proof-of-concept, a non-superficial attitude towards UI, and open source, check out the slides explaining the philosophy of the Eclipse Project. Also see their Project Page.

Thanks to Erik for being excited at me about it.

I'll have to read that when I'm on my own machine. Also I'm going to mail you pointers to those papers I was talking about, which, so far, range from appealing to crazy.

Eclipse is our IDE of choice at work. After using it for more than a year, I can say that I find it to be a huge productivity enhancer. The only downside is that I have become so dependent on all its powerful tools and helpful features that I find it practically impossible to write Java without it.

I'm assuming Erik was the first comment? -- cool, send them on.

Angus, I can imagine, without even being a code producer myself. I thought it looked like a truly swell, smart dev environment.

I should add that everyone has their own favorite IDE, and there is endless scope for argument about which is better. But Eclipse is, IMHO, pretty good and the price is certainly right.

A nice thing about Eclipse is that it can be used for more than Java. There's a project to produce an Eclipse-based C/C++ IDE and IBM have just announced an IDE for Laszlo based on Eclipse. Which raises the interesting possibility that someone will one day produce something similar for XUL.
