Earthsea in Clorox, by Ursula K. Le Guin
"Well," I said, "you do realise that almost everybody in Earthsea is 'those people,' or anyhow not white?" I don't remember what their answer to that was -- it may have used that wonderful weasel word "colorblind" -- but it wasn't reassuring, because I do remember saying to my husband, oh, gee, I bet they're going to have a honky Ged.
I missed the show, I don't think I've read the books, but I enjoyed the article anyway. I like process stories. It did seem a little weird, though, to throw a photo of a Chinese-Dutch-Canadian actress into the section about everyone but Danny Glover being white.
ReplyDeleteYeah.... well, it's all a bit defensive on her part, since she has to defend herself now that people have associated her with the TV versions; but after the previews, I knew she'd had nothing to do with it, from knowing how she works and thinks.
ReplyDeleteYou should read the books. I should reread them. I kept wondering if they were even possible to film, and how I'd do it to convey that world if I had to make her happy...
